WELLBEING
& SUPPORT
In St. Michael's College Transition Year (TY), the wellbeing and holistic development of each student are central to the programme's aims.
Our TY programme incorporates a range of activities, support systems and curriculum components designed to foster physical, emotional and social health.
1
Guidance Counselling
Students participate in a Career Guidance Class covering CV writing, interest tests, career exploration, and subject choices for Senior Cycle. The careers portal website and the Reach plus programme are key resources used.
The Subject Choice Forum with 6th Year students provides a valuable opportunity for TY students to hear from peers about subject areas and their links to careers, helping them make informed choices and reflect on future pathways. This aligns with accessing career-related events or learning environments and supports critical reflection upon career pathways.
Study Skills support is offered, including the option of making one-to-one appointments with a Guidance Counsellor to help plan study timetables and discuss concerns.
This guidance supports students in setting learning goals, increasing their capacity for independent and self-regulated learning and trying a range of learning strategies.
2
Wellbeing Support
A regular Check-in system is in place.
The Transition Wellbeing Survey is a regular tool used to gather feedback on student wellbeing, engagement and pastoral care.
The survey helps the TY Tutor, Year Head and TY Co-Ordinator identify students who may be disengaging, struggling socially or experiencing a low sense of wellbeing.
This process directly supports students maturing socially and emotionally.
3
Additional Educational Needs (AEN) Support
STMC is committed to inclusivity, ensuring every student receives appropriate support to reach their full potential and meeting diverse learning needs.
Class Provision for TY students includes Learning Support classes (for students with Irish exemptions and diagnosed specific learning difficulties) and Resource Classes for those with complex needs.
Co-Teaching and In-Class Support are available, particularly in core subjects, involving a subject teacher and a support teacher.
SNA Support is provided where necessary to assist with physical, emotional, and organisational challenges.
Dulann Online Courses are included as a valuable component for students with additional educational needs. These offer fully certified, interactive eLearning courses in areas like Health and Safety and Customer Care.
