Work and Community Placements

Work or Community Placements are often considered one of the most memorable and valuable parts of Transition Year. These placements offer students the opportunity to experience a real-world working environment, helping them prepare for adult professional life. All TY students are required to complete scheduled placements during the school year, during the allocated weeks to avoid disrupting class learning.

Students are responsible for organising their own placements.

For insurance and feedback procedures, students must submit the email address of their workplace supervisor. This is used for sharing employer insurance and liability information and for collecting the employer's evaluation of the student's placement.

Organising placements well in advance is strongly recommended. Information about placements is shared at the Information Night for incoming TYs and their parents. The school also provides a Work/Community Experience Employer Feedback Form (available to download on the TY webpage).

Work or Community placements directly contribute to the Career Exploration dimension by allowing students to gain first-hand workplace experience. They also involve guided reflective tasks on these experiences, contributing to the development of career-related competencies.

The process of organising the placement, adhering to schedules and managing responsibilities develops autonomy and organisational skills.

2

Law

The Law course offers students an introduction to the Irish legal system. On the first day, students explore key topics in criminal law, such as Murder and Manslaughter, Rape and Sexual Offences, Drug Offences, Assault, and Property and Petty Offences.

For the remainder of the week, students attend sessions at the Criminal Courts of Justice, where they observe live trials and court proceedings. They also engage with the charity Care After Prison and meet legal professionals, including judges and former offenders. Discussions on the architecture of the courts as a practical expression of law are also included. Students are required to dress smart casual for court visits.

Cookery

This hands-on course introduces TY students to the fundamentals of cooking. It covers basic knife skills, kitchen hygiene and safety, and daily recipe preparation. Led by an experienced instructor, the course runs as a daily 5-hour practical session and concludes each day with a sit-down lunch enjoying the meal prepared.

The course takes place in the school Pavilion, and students do not need to wear their uniform. A health and safety warning is in place regarding student conduct.

4

Boxing and Self Defence

A physically demanding yet rewarding activity, this course is run by a team of athletes and coaches.

This week will be facilitated by Irish Boxing Champions, Sean and Patrick Headon along with their brother, Jamie - formally ranked No 1 in Ireland and one of Europe’s top 50 CrossFit athletes and Gary Burns, strength and conditioning coach and physical therapist.

Daily activities will be divided between boxing training, strength & conditioning, guest speakers and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/Judo. There will be plenty of time allocated each day to rest, recover and refuel.

Classes will take place in Chapter 2 Fitness, Sandyford Industrial Estate, Dublin 18. 10am - 3pm daily. Please dress in sports gear for the week. All instructors are first aid trained.
